Study sheets are the name of the game. I would advise reading the textbook and making outlines, even when not required to by the homework. This class requires you to teach yourself a good chunk of the material. Diligence and a good work ethic is more required in this class than most others.
READ the books! If there are reading quizzes you will not do well on them without reading. For the essays, periodically ask the teacher for his/her thoughts, and they will give you great suggestions.
I took Advanced Writing Workshop with this teacher, and had a great experience. The discussions were intimate and engaging. Prepare to write 5-6 essays over the course of the school year, and really learn how to WRITE like never before. The essays are creative and interesting. You will write multiple drafts and revise, work in groups, and help each other. There are often about. 5-1. 5 hours of "readings" assigned twice a week of sample essays that you discuss in class.
