Go to his office hours often, that will get him to like you and also for you to learn how to write better to suit his tastes.

For AP US History-- it shouldn't be too difficult to get a good grade in Campbell's class. Make sure to write A LOT on writing assignments and use specific details. Suck up to him by participating in class and asking for extra help. If you need extensions--ASK. He will grant them. However, you may be totally unprepared for the AP Exam. Starting at the beginning of the year, use outside resources to study; get a review book, flashcards, etc. and quiz yourself on the material. The only resource he gives you is the textbook, which is good but also very lengthy and boring. I would recommend reading everything in the textbook and also supplementing with review videos. He WILL NOT teach you strategies to do well on the exam (writing DBQs, LEQs, and SAQs). Find these out yourself by talking to peers in other classes (Taylor and Miller) and doing research online. You need to understand the AP grading rubric in order to do well. If you want to succeed in this class, you WILL need to teach yourself the material.

Dunham's freshman english class is difficult--probably tougher than any of the other teachers. You have to do all the reading she assigns in order to do the writing assignments and succeed in her class. You also have to try your best to make her like you. Try not to talk too much in class, and do your best on all the work. Turn in every assignment she gives. Try to get the classwork done DURING class. If you need help, ASK HER FOR HELP. If you are doing poorly on writing assignments (she's a really tough grader), SIGN UP FOR A WRITING CONFERENCE WITH HER. Don't complain or argue about your grade, just ask what you can do better. Ask her to look over assignments before you turn them in or ask for help getting started.

Learn how to use the subjunctive tense properly--that's probably my main take-away from Spanish 4A. Also work hard on your presentations (you can't read off slides/a script, so you will have to either memorize it or speak on the spot). Stay on her good side.

-He gives different tests from the rest of the math department, so don’t bother asking your friends for answers to the tests since he gives different ones. -Also always bring your textbook and never talk to your friends or else he will take points off from your grade. -Never gives out study guides for tests, often is difficult to know what material to expect on tests -Homework almost every single night

-DON'T CHEAT ON THE TESTS (she caught someone and took them into the hallway in front of our class) -Use the grade before you's flashcards (make a friend and pass them down! ) -save your flashcards for the entire year (I threw mine out and didn't realize that we had a final) -keep up with the homework (she deducts points) -participate -be a good student (you can tell who she likes more because of where they sit- favorite towards front, proud 1st rower right here! ) -study for 10 mins on the weekends- not only will it prepare you for your tests but also the final -have a study group! this helped me a LOT on all of my quizzes and tests

Francesca Nuñez-Powers, 9-12 Spanish I, V, VA, VIA

For Spanish I-IV, the class is sufficient. However, her Spanish V (regular) class is treated like a Spanish V Advanced class, so I would definitely prepare for the class with memorization, pay attention, take notes, participate, listen, and pronunciation, as the grading can be harsh in the class. For Spanish VI Advanced, the class is moderate, definitely prepare, pay attention to the movies shown in class, memorize material in advance, participate, be aware of any of her grading rubrics (if applicable) and really demonstrate your commitment to the class. Spanish VIA is easier than her VA class, and is a little less harder than AP, but at times definitely acts as a stepping stone or bridge to AP (especially for kids who haven't taken AP), as the ACTFL standard at the end of accomplishing the class is at advanced, which is near fluent. However, Spanish V Advanced is her hardest class, as it is harder than AP, and even VIA, somewhat due to possible preparation for AP, so for many it is the hardest Spanish class at PHS. The class requires a majority of memorization, participation (a must! ), interpersonal speaking, oral skills, focus, and commitment to learning. I feel if you are fluent or feel confident enough to elaborate persuasively in the language, and like on the spot debates, then the class is for you, as well as your ability to write confidently in the language. Prior to VA, the skill of fluency, high proficiency, or being highly immersed in programs such as DLI helps prepare you for the class. Spanish VA focuses a majority on rigorous class debates (unlike Socratic Seminars in 3A and 4A), interpersonal speaking presentations that are memorized, impromptu debates, rigorously graded in class essays called "diarios" which are collected at the end of class (mostly given on block days), partner debates alone with the teacher, assigned readings, and a lot of participation where the teacher will ask a question, and you have to follow up on it individually (in your own words in Spanish). Lastly, for VA, know the subjunctive!

Steffanie Shoop

Ap bio- Shoop is a great teacher with lots of passion and knowledge of the subject. She is an AP grader and prepares you especially well for the exam, although some self-studying is needed as well. It is a fast paced and rigorous course, but manageable. If you manage your time, probably only around 30 min a night or less. Tests are quite difficult and so it’s hard to get an A. She is a very enthusiastic and engaging lecturer and genuinely cares about her students, although at times she is harsh/critical or a little annoying. She grades very quickly and sometimes makes mistakes, but will always fix any real issues if asked.

Ms. Smolyn will always give you extensions if you need them, she's very reasonable. However don't expect to get a curve on tests or anything drastic like that.
