DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Coming into this school year, my expectations were low. I knew that going to school online or only going into school for part of the week would be difficult but nothing prepared me for this class. I have always been good in my sciences. I’ve always loved learning about it. When I grow up I want to go into medicine, which science is a big part of. With that being said, I have grown to hate the subject. I am taking this honors chemistry class and I can say without a doubt, this is the most stressed out about school I have ever been. The other students in my class, whom I've bonded with over our confusion and unmotivation we have developed since beginning school, have compiled a list of traits we believe sum up this class as a whole. They are as follows. This course has proven time and time again that it is a toxic learning environment. The workload is almost triple compared to my other classes. We are constantly ridiculed for plagiarism and the use of the internet, but that is where she gets all of her assignments, word for word. You might be wondering why we feel the need to use the internet after we are told not to. It is because most times she gives us the assignment before teaching the lesson. It sounds ridiculous that someone would do that but it happens a lot. A few times now she has given us the test and then the next day gave us the study guide for the test. How are we supposed to know what to study if we aren’t given the resources beforehand? My grade has never been good in this class. I really want it to be but this teaching style just doesn’t work for me personally, and a lot of other people feel the same way. I strongly advise anyone taking this class to drop it, immediately.
There is absolutely no teaching involved when taking this class. The "teaching" pattern is as follows: -Study Guide + Vocabulary -Lab -Test -Lab -Test -Study Guide + Lab + Vocabulary -Test The study guides can be up to 10 pages long, and there can be 20+ vocabulary words that have absolutely nothing to do with the lesson, and all of this is due within a very short notice. It seems almost every week we have a test, and it isn't fair. The tests, which we have way too often, have nothing we learned on them. Rely on Google or some other search engine to give the answers because you obviously can't rely on her to teach the material properly. She advises us to go to the extra help sessions if we need anything, but chances are we have no idea what to even ask because the only information we learn is the stuff we forage for ourselves. She occasionally goes over PowerPoints, however she flies through them way too fast and uses words and terms 99% of us have never heard in our lives. I strongly advise anybody taking this course with her to switch teachers or go back to regular chemistry because this class will cause you more harm than good. Even if you love chemistry, you'll absolutely despise it after this.
Be sure to look up the answer keys to each and every worksheet, because you cannot count on her to teach the lesson. She relies on her own students to teach themselves and if she ever finds out that you don't understand part of a lesson, she would result to the excuse that you haven't taken the proper 5 page notes on the textbook pages.
