This class can be very difficult even you love reading and English. Mr. Mcfarlin's tests require you to pretty much memorize the books/chapters and the answers he wants are very random and unfair. Also, he almost never gives feedback, so it is hard to get better in his class. Plus, if you do go to him for help, he can be mean and unhelpful. My big advice would be to memorize each chapter and all the details, and try to do the grammar exercises to balance out your grades on his reading quizzes.

Pay attention to his lessons for the structures of essay. If you can nail down a really good structure for your essays and pay attention when going over annotations in the books you read, you will easily be able to write a great essay. Annotate because you want to and because its helpful even though he doesn't really check annotations. You will get more out of the class.

Mcfarlin is the best teacher ever. He really cares about his students and provides a classroom that enables a safe space to learn. He does call on people even if they don't raise their hands. This may be nerve-racking, but being forced to participate really helped me and made me a way more confident student. By the second month of school, I was raising my hand multiple times a day. He really instills sentence structure and essay structure in you. He doesn't assume everyone is on the same page. He makes sure of it by going over the basics. He's a great AP lang teacher too, and I would not have taken the class if he didn't encourage me to do so in his 10th grade class. He really prepares you for the AP exam and makes sure you know how to write all the essays and makes the class do many practice multiple choice problems and goes over multiple-choice strategy. I got an A on the AP Lang exam, and his class had more 5's than any other class. ]For assigned book readings, he gives the class multiple days to read a couple of chapters depending on how long they are. He gives a lot more time than other teachers. He also sometimes brings donuts to class which would always make my day! A great teacher that really changed me as a student and made me the writer I am today.
