Well for starters talk to someone who has already taken his class - they will be your best pointer for how to do well. Also make sure that you pay attention to how he wants you to do stuff as he has a very specific style for his tests and quizzes which are all essays. Also make sure you are prepared to ask GOOD questions and even if you don’t have anything try to speak up and ask questions or comment on something as it counts for a lot of your grade. Also he occasionally cold calls so make sure to be prepped for that too. Lowkey you are a bit cooked but hey it’s not your fault you just had bad luck getting John amo so like try your best and know that no matter how you do, you are still a Bellarmine student and therefore a smart and reasonable individual who is capable of extraordinary things. At times this class may seem hopeless and you may just want to accept your bad grade, but always keep pushing and know that he has mood swings so maybe the next class he will be better. You got this good luck!! One last thing - NO DRINKING OR EATING IN CLASS!!!! (even water)

This class is ultimately the hardest I have taken with her. Miss one period and you're basically screwed. A lot of note-taking required along with a lot of memorization to do well. Exams were extremely hard and she expects you to understand it with ease.

I took Faulkner Seminar Honors with Mr. Lum during the second semester of my senior year. I was already checked out, with all college applications submitted, and I had constantly heard about how difficult this class was. Suffice to say, I was not looking forward to it. But Mr. Lum, through a combination of humor, engaging lectures, and a deep care and compassion for his students, made every paper, every reading assignment, and every class discussion worth it. He helped change the way I feel about English as a field of study, gave insightful tips and helpful advice on my writing, and opened up new avenues of thought and analysis for me. Faulkner as an author and as a person is incredibly complex and difficult to understand, but Mr. Lum helped the students in his class diagnose and understand the unique form of writing and narration that Faulkner employs, and he encouraged us all to continue studying Faulkner and unraveling his mysteries as we continue diving deeper into our study of literature. Don't let the "honors" title scare you off, or the idea that Faulkner will be too difficult to understand, or that "it's my senior year and I deserve a break. " You will be studying and learning with the best English teacher at Bellarmine, and the bonds formed within your Faulkner class are lifelong. Despite the occasional procrastination on a reading assignment or the difficulty in thesis formation on The Sound and the Fury paper, I cannot emphasize enough what a valuable experience this class was for me, and I strongly, strongly encourage every rising senior at Bellarmine to take it.

One of my best classes at Bellarmine and truly one that prepared me well for my future. Would really recommend taking over the other English classes even though it’s AP, simply because of how much fun you get to have while also learning. This class will really make you enjoy literature and reading as a whole, as well as Shakespeare. Decent amount of essays and writing involved and A LOT of tests that are rlly hard but it’s ok because they prepare you well for the actual AP test.

The class itself content wise is fine, but pretty much any quality method of teaching has gone out of the window. She frequently yells at students and does not treat them with respect. Also, grading is entirely subjective (especially for oral assignments). Would not recommend this class to anyone.
