Read the texts he assigns you and you'll be fine. In the beginning of the semester he will give you short stories to read over the week, and next class there is a tiny quiz on them. Frequently you have to notice little details like a character eating a watermelon lol, so read them over at least like 5 times. Honestly it's a really fun class if you listen and interact

Make sure to do the readings and listen in class and you'll be fine. Essay questions are based on usually content that is discussed in class only
