Take notes on everything he says as questions on tests are often on what he says during lessons rather than whats on the slides.

Learn about the teacher not the course. The tests are based on what he says not what the course is about.

You are going to have to put an exponential amount of time into his course in order to do well. Never worry about having a lower average in his class than you had in previous years, he is a pretty hard teacher and your average will drop. He is a nice guy though.
