There are a lot of essays, and collectively they count for about as much as the exams. Generally you will have to memorize a lot, but don't expect everything to be useful.

Learn to analyze instead of recalling to do well on essays. Pay attention because social has a lot of content and almost everything is fair game for quizzes and tests.
