For band, practising everyday is very helpful. Learn the exercises, for it is extremely helpful. Your section is always there to help, so you can ask them for help, or you can ask Mr. Speers. When it is time for theory tests, it is a good idea to at least review, if not study. Theory is not my strong suit, so I study, but if theory comes easily to you, or you know it, I would suggest just reviewing.

Practice your parts at home a few times a week, as well as exercises 3, 5, and 6, especially if you've got first parts, for at least 30 minutes. If you're in a jazz band as well, bump that up to every day for a bit more time. You'll be able to play most parts to his standards by the time the concert comes around. For theory, if you take music theory externally above level 2 RCM, don't worry about anything. If you do not, memorize the order of flats and sharps, how they transmit into keys, musical terminology, how to transpose from your instrument to concert pitch, and how to count rhythms. This will mostly be taught to you in the span of a few days.

Mr. Speers is a great band director. He is super helpful, and knows loads of tricks to help you become the best musician. I was in Symphonic band in grade 10 with him, and had a great time. He truly cares about his students, and does whatever he can to make your experience in band the best it can be. When school let out for COVID-19, he sent out a message to every student wishing them a happy birthday. Learning the exercises from your music bible is super helpful. Mr. Speers may not post on schoolzone all the time, but he does set up a remind, and sends links when he needs to and reminders for events. Don't go on your phone during class; focus on the music. Practice, learn your part, meet your section and the rest of the band, and you'll have a pretty awesome time in band!

Mr. Speers is what keeps the band program the best in Edmonton. His high standards, joyful style of teaching, and treatment of bands as professionals leads to some of the best performances Edmonton high schools can offer. He has quite literally inspired me to take music to a higher education, and I am sure to keep him in my mind for the rest of my life as the person who truly furthered my interest in music to a professional level. It's not about the course, it's about the performance and experience, and you can gain the best of those very simply through symphonic or concert band. Side note: If he makes fun of you or singles you out in class, it means he likes you more than other students
