Orchestra class is a fine arts elective class, so does guitar that Mr. Lopez also teach; and this class at Taylor offers end-of-semester concerts, mid-semester performances (most often Symphony and sometimes Philharmonic, often after school); and participations at the UIL such as Solo & Ensemble and Concert & Sight Reading contests. End-of-semester concerts and UIL C&SR are worth 2 major grades each for students' participation. UIL S&E contest may worth 1 or 2 major grades dependent on Mr. Lopez. Lower level orchestra students (Concert and Philharmonic) that given their parts (violin, viola, cello, bass) of an orchestra piece will have to write down note names and perhaps measure numbers for him to grade students' papers on the next day - with 10-point deduction per day if turned in past due date. There are play quizzes or play tests on parts as a group (violin I, violin II, violin III/viola, cello, and bass) to be graded. The final exam in both orchestra and guitar classes will be based on multiple-choice questions that is based on music fundamentals and theory.
