Do the homework. It is vital. You learn the basics in the homework and then class helps you make it make full sense. Those students who do the homework every day are very well prepared to learn mathematics and get a very deep understanding of the curriculum. Those who come to class unprepared are not going to succeed. Also, don't plan to rely on your calculator. He finds way to make sure the test questions really check to see you understand math. I have never learned so much in a math class, but it doesn't come for free.
