Vanguard High School Reviews

317 E 67TH ST-RM 401, New York, New York , United States

The class consists exclusively of online assignments, where students are expected to work independently. There is about five minutes of instructions given before class, however the rest is solely online. There is minimal homework and classwork throughout the semester (which is nice! ). The class grade is based on completion of online activities and one short, final presentation at the end of the semester that is based on the materials learned during the online courses.

Ronit's 10th grade geometry class was, hmm lets see... hard. The class required a lot of memorization. There were quizzes given every week, and multiple class and homework assignments daily. Student's grades were predominantly based off of the weekly quizzes. Unlike other math classes that I have been subjected to during my high school years, this one did not offer many opportunities for extra credit. However, it did offer limited test retakes and opportunities where students could receive extra help during lunch hours. The class itself was a mix of lectures and worksheets, which is pretty typical for high school math class. I think Ronit could have incorporated more hands-on activities (especially since it was a geometry class) as the lectures and worksheets were often, with all due respect, tiring and boring, and the average student performance during the semester I attended was poor. Overall a typical high school math class. Hard and boring.

10th grade Honors Writing was well taught. I learned many valuable writing tips, and aced the Regions thanks to this class, taught by Marc Pierre. While proving to be helpful in the long run, this class was intense, tiring, and required the most work of any English class I ever have attended (until college, that is). Consisting of numerous essays, analyzing of texts, readings, and short answer questions, the amount of work seemed endless. The topics in the class were often controversial and long. The class, like many at Vanguard, lacked variety and focused solely on a single side of social justice issues. While still highly biased, this class was much more open and inclusive, and I feel that the things I learned were more relevant than those studied in other English classes at Vanguard. If you are a Vanguard student who is looking for a relevant, well-taught class that will benefit you in the long run, this is the class for you.
