You really have to do the work on your own. Stay focused during reading time, and try to teach yourself decoding strategies. At home, apply the phonics rules that are supposed to help. If something is confusing, do not be afraid to ask questions persistently! All of this mostly falls on the student and parent, because the in-class support is just not enough.
