You don't necessarily HAVE to pay attention in class, but if you don't, then the powerpoints on his slides mean nothing to you. Notes are not a must. The tests are mostly obscure points from the lecture that weren't discussed in detail. There were rarely any quizzes, as it was mostly tests. When it's a test day, expect your backpack to be either at the front or back of the class away from your seat. Any assessment is announced at least a week before you take it. Participation is based on a favoritism aspect. AKA randomly being chosen to answer during class, and it's usually the same five people every time.

Not a big fan of Mr. Jackson as a person or as a teacher. He could be worse, but he most definitely could be better. Most of the kids that talk during class don't get yelled at because of his hearing problems, or he'll unknowingly chew out the wrong person. Also, if you disagree on his grading, take it to him and you can convince him to give you back points on the assessment. The debate at the middle/end of the year is super confusing when being set up, but makes sense in practice. If he gives you a direction, in a few minutes he WILL contradict himself. This will continue throughout the year, so be prepared for that.
