You don't necessarily HAVE to pay attention in class, but if you don't, then the powerpoints on his slides mean nothing to you. Notes are not a must. The tests are mostly obscure points from the lecture that weren't discussed in detail. There were rarely any quizzes, as it was mostly tests. When it's a test day, expect your backpack to be either at the front or back of the class away from your seat. Any assessment is announced at least a week before you take it. Participation is based on a favoritism aspect. AKA randomly being chosen to answer during class, and it's usually the same five people every time.
