There are two papers per term that make up a large part of your grade. You should turn in multiple drafts of each throughout the term to get a good grade (in the 2nd term, one of the "papers" is "free-style, " i. e. it can be anything, a song, a painting, etc) You are tested on very small details on the readings you get during the midterms, such as what Orwell says about dying metaphors, religious language in Lincoln's 2nd Inaugural Address, if DFW signposts in "This is Water, " etc. You must also write Twitter-length free responses during the midterm (really an end of 1st term test). You must work very quickly during the tests (the final consists of writing a poem, making an "index" of terms you have learned, making a rubric using emojis, writing a one-minute summary script for a Mr. Burns play, and an analysis of the class, all within one class period). The class has a large amount of summer homework (annotate several chapters of a textbook, write an essay, and annotate "Death of a Moth" (Dillard) You are required to put on a play called Mr. Burns near the end of the class, complete with singing, choreography, and a lights show. You also need to analyze each act and make a map of the references and allusions in the play You have 1 BLA book club once a term, each giving you weekly assignments The first day of class, you have a quiz on things like polysyndetons and zeugmas You do very little practice for the AP Test You have to analyze ads.
