Take good notes. Sometimes he surprises you and instead of having a regular test, it's an open notes test. Also, binder checks are worth 10% of your grade. So really take good notes. Also, don't be afraid to joke around with him. He likes it when you are able to joke around. And DO NOT take any of his jokes seriously, he is a very big jokester, and he will roast you... but he is only kidding! (And he doesn't care if you roast him back! ) He is also one of my favorite teachers!

Commit to a real practice regimen outside of class itself, the class is not the space to make the mistakes you'd be making in practice--it's the space to hone your ability to play *with others*. Don't be afraid to ask for help with a piece from your section leader or from Mrs. Wardwell / Mr. Sheldon themselves, they will gladly help you. If you are a percussionist, do not ignore learning pitched music / be shy from the mallet instruments. You will thank yourself so much down the line.
