Ok so, the class will probably kill a bit of your sanity. Its really difficult, and requires a lot of determination (especially if you have her for ap lang and ap research in the same year)

GUYS DO NOT LISTEN TO THE HATERS!! A lot of people hate on Dr. Callihan, especially upperclassmen that have a low chair (im c/o 28 and idk when he stopped beibg mean), he was really mean in the past but he is a changed man! He is a middle class middle aged good Christian boy who goes to church. As long as ur not tweaking w the accidentals and stuff all the time and have a good attitude, and try to talk to him or email him a few times, and CALL HIM DR, he will tolerate u and be nice. he just locked in when it comes to music but as a person if you talk to him outside of band he vibin. so yeah dont let ur unfounded hatred impact ur enjoyment and practicing, idk for something like band as long as u practice ull get good grades but the whole ahh band is brainrotted and doomscroll instead of practice except the mst majors but theyre studying diff eq instead of practicing so u need to do ur part and lock in especially bc whypas majors courseload are light

SHE IS LITERALLY AVAILABLE ANY TIME YOU ARE TO HELP YOU. show up after school, during lunch, before school... if u fail its actually ur fault... she posts so many resources too and she is soooo nice. make sure you practice the concepts!! a lot of the time i felt confident that i would know how to do it as i read the instructions on how to do it and when i actually had to do it without instructions on the test i flunked it, but i realized this soon and got a's both semesters later. if you need help just ask, shes really nice and she still waves to me in the hallways (im a soph now i took it for mst physics freshman year)

If you're worried about your grade, don't be, it's very difficult to get below an A, at least in Wind/Symphonic/Intermediate. My advice is do not major in YPAS, do a minor with HSU major, so you can avoid Chamber which is a great source of Bs!! In my year, Intermediate Band was very easy, but I hear grading is much stricter now. You really should not be messing up notes on scale tests, if you can do that then you'll have an easy A. If you don't like the class, knowing how to play the music helps keep the guilty conscience off and makes it much more enjoyable. Alternatively, apply for another major, we have too many people If you're worried about your musical success, practice more and do it with a metronome starting at half tempo. They say what you don't want to do is usually what you need to do to succeed. Start looking at the etudes in the summer! The way muscle memory gets better even when you don't play things for a month is so sigma Practice all-state music! Band is a horrible EC for its opportunity costs unless you can place well in all-state/other ensembles like LYO and LYWS You can be bad and not really know your part freshman year and the directors can still like you, just have a good attitude and don't talk during class, stuff like that If you're a freshman, please play your scales, etudes, and all-state with good technique, and don't turn things in late. Freshman year is your only year to stand out as an average player, and defines whether you'll be liked for the next 3 years, unless you rise to first chair later

Do your work ahead of time. He doesn't collect it daily, but rather every 6 weeks so be sure to schedule and plan the work as he will NOT go over homework in class everyday like most other math teachers.

From the experience of a MST major who had Geometry freshman year, Mr. Salkeld is very chill and is always available for help. If you need help, just show up to his class and ask for it! I never had to personally, but whenever I needed to ask a question he was always there. Granted, I barely scraped by with an A, but it was a fun class and I felt intellectually enriched. The finals were also very easy, as they were multiple choice compared to the usually short answer questions. Sit in the front of the class so you'll be more focused, or ask him to move you up because you have eye issues or something. Sit near smart people, there's a good amount of casual work where he lets you talk to people around you so you'll want someone you can ask questions to, or if not you can get up and ask him. There is seriously a pandemic of being scared to ask for help. If you do/can do all the homework yourself, then your grade will be fine. Don't listen to the people who complain, it's Geometry which means everyone who's in it didn't get into integrated their 7th grade year (i. e. no ambition or hard work).

MAKE SURE TO MAKE TIME FOR PROJECTS! The dates seem far away and you have a lot of time until they're due, but do them once their assigned because you will forget about them!

This is only for Honors French 1 students (Mostly freshmans), she is extremely nice, super sweet teacher, she lets you have your phone during class, ipad, laptop, as long as you know what you're doing and taking good notes it is very easy to pass that class. Because it is an Honors class, there is barely any homework, I've only had homework like twice for the whole year in that class.
