Minnerly was-and still is-my favorite teacher I've ever had. There's a reason he has tenure. He's fun, enjoys his job, likes teaching us and challenging us to be better musicians, and is always around for extra help or advice. He cares about his students genuinely. Every year, at the end, he reads us (I don't know if he still does) a book from Dr. Seuss. He started crying just right in front of us because he was gonna miss the seniors. This isn't a jab at him at all, but proof he does care. He is human after all, and humans tend to get attached to people who share the same interests as them and who have been around a while. My grad year, 2018, there was only 4 seniors in band but we had all been in band since 7th grade, so he saw all of us grow up and improve over 6 years. I, and I know some others who did too, had sort of a teacher crush on him. Really, it was more of strong admiration. Although, I have heard from others and seen myself that he can slightly play favorites, like how someone stayed Band Leader after they got kicked off the 4 day band trip for bringing alc*hol and how I, Assistant Band Leader (although I argued with Minn about this at the beginning of the year-I wanted top spot), was not promoted. Yes, I am still annoyed by this-especially because I had the big solo for that competition and we won 1st place-but perhaps he thought she was punished enough. Not only does Minn teach you how to play music, but he also teaches you a bit about the people who wrote it. In March, he does the Sousa March Mania event from the U. S. Marines Band with us, and we all vote. It is awesome. I still vote now on my own. High school was very miserable most of the time for me, but band and Mr. Minnerly (and Atkins, too) made it bearable. It helped me deal with stuff I had going on at home and stuff I had going on personally. I miss Mr. Minnerly, to be honest. He always believed in us, and I miss that positivity. I wish I could take band with him, again, even if it meant going back to what my life outside of band was like then. Every teacher should be like Mr. Minnerly.
