Mrs. Balderas is very talkative and social, which reflects in her class style. She believes that to understand a language, you must practice speaking it with other people. So, there are many Spanish presentations throughout the trimester. There's mostly partner or group projects, but also one or two individual projects. Find a good group to work with, and memorize your script! You will get points deducted if you do not memorize it.

Calc BC is really hard, but the homework is around half an hour a day and you sometimes have time to complete it at the end of class. Most topics are only one day lessons, and before a big test there are a few days dedicated to review. The first trimester is mostly review of Calc AB, which will prepare you well for the AP exam in May. Mr. Bernabeo is chill and opens up office hours, his teaching style involves lots of collaboration in class. Understand his expectations and respect him, and you will succeed in the class.

Mrs. Buehler teaches a lot of classes, though I had her for a full year for AP Calc AB. She breaks down calculus so it is easier to understand and less intimidating. Even though she doesn't mind if people use their phone, and no one participates, you will be more than prepared for BC if you pay attention and do the homework. Her policies are fair too, because late homework is accepted for full credit, and she rounds grades if you show "steady improvement" across your test scores. Another piece of advice I would give is that the multiple choice sections on the finals are weighted much more than the free response sections, so practice doing AP-style MCQs at home. Sometimes she sneaks extra credit points within the questions, so read all directions very carefully! She always has office hours open if you need extra support outside the class, or want to review your tests.

The final is only around 10% of your grade and it’s all multiple choice. Mrs. Callicott often takes questions from previous unit tests and slaps them onto another test so you should maybe try to remember some of those. Make sure your FRQ responses are detailed and take up the entire space. Don’t complain if the class is too easy or hard, she doesn’t like complainers.

JC is the GOAT! The class material and tests are fairly easy, and the homework load is light. But spend time outside to study if you are in AP Bio, because the content on the exam is harder than the class material.

Despite the title of the class, Mr. Coleman's Drawing and Painting is not just for the extremely talented kids. I do not have natural talent in art but Mr. Coleman genuinely supported me, as his class is welcoming to people who simply want to improve their drawing and painting skills. He believes that everyone can create great art with practice and knowledge of the craft. There is one big art show at the end of the trimester and is great to go to so you can get inspired by other people's styles. Coleman says that having Drawing and Painting in the first period also improves focus in subsequent classes which is true. And thankfully, there are no tests. Just creating whatever you want.

Ms. Darcey is very nice. If you show up during office hours with your essay then she will be happy to go over it with you and give you feedback. If you have her for AP Seminar 1, the Animal Farm essay and Macbeth on demand are a higher percentage of your grade than the final presentation. For Animal Farm you need to do the reading outside of class. For Macbeth, make sure you pay attention during the movie, as you will use information from that on the on demand. She is quite enthusiastic and the lessons about lenses are interesting.

There is a lack of communication in Hall's class, especially in AP Seminar. He often says that it is up to us to figure things out by ourselves, though his Canvas layout is very confusing and it will take some time to find things. Also, he does not allow for extensions on essays, unless an "extraordinary circumstance that was out of your control" comes up, so it's important to not neglect this class.

Most in class health lessons only take 15-20 minutes, and after that you can play games on your phone, or talk to your friends. She plays a lot of movies. For the PE portion, there is a continuous run which can be hard. She doesn't like to yell and is very patient, but don't test her.

Your notes are not put into the gradebook, but they determine whether you are eligible for test retakes. There are four types of tests: MCQ (multiple choice questions, used for the midterms and finals), LEQ (long essay question for unit tests), SAQ (quizzes, but unit tests in trimester 3), and DBQ (mostly practice for the AP Exam in May). Do good on LEQ particularly since the first one is worth 15% of your grade, and the second one is worth 20% of your grade. Same for MCQ. You get two projects per trimester and they are worth 15% of your grade each. Ms. Kim is very nice and often does lectures where you draw a timeline in your notebook to visualize the events. She sometimes holds these during office hours. However most of the things we do in class are not that important, and are just mini lessons related to the notes so you don't need to 100% focus in class.

Krenz

Mr. Krenz is very calm and relates to his students' experiences. He understands if circumstances come up that prevent you from doing your homework, and always accepts late work. One thing to be wary of is that unlike most of the teachers, he does not post most in-class lessons on Canvas, so write down the textbook problem numbers in your notebook at the beginning of class. Compacted Math can go by fast, since you learn 2. 5 years of math in just one year, but if you take good notes and ask questions during class or in office hours, you will do good in the class.

I had Mrs. Lanzi for Precalc 1 and let me just start by saying she does not like her Precalc classes, which mostly consist of freshmen and sophomores. During our class, she would constantly compare us negatively to how good her Calc BC kids (mostly upperclassmen) were doing. I recommend that one not stick out too much in class, and if you have questions then you can ask her during office hours. Sometimes, office hours is open study for just the Precalc kids so you can also form study groups with kids in your class. You gotta stick together after all. Precalc is a weird class overall because all sorts of things are covered, such as trigonometric functions and identities, fractional exponents, and imaginary numbers, and the difficulty is very inconsistent. YOU HAVE to memorize all the trig identities to do good in this class. Mrs. Lanzi is VERY particular about what work you need to show too, and it's best that you show every step.

The most unique thing is that she allows you to retake learning checks at the end of the trimester. Even though they're only worth 10% of your grade total it still helps, especially if you're on the borderline (like if you have 89%).

Profe LJ is very strict and has high expectations for her students. If you follow the rules and participate, you will do great. Make sure you are in your seat and prepared to start class before the bell rings. Phones are never allowed in class and should be placed in your backpack, but computers are allowed as long as you are using it for material related to class. Late work is not accepted, but most homework can be completed during class.

Frank Liao

Liao teaches a lot of classes, and his office hours is usually packed with AP Physics students. However, he often sets aside certain days for his biology and chemistry students to go to office hours and review tests and study together, especially before an upcoming test. Take advantage of these! The tests are much harder than classwork/homework, and are rarely, if ever curved. The labs are fun but make sure you find a good group, as he grades individual lab reports more harshly than group reports. He is very knowledgeable and funny so lectures are usually interesting even if you don't learn much.

Mr. McNeely's PE class is a blast! I had him the whole year and he has low tolerance for goofing around, but if you try your best and answer questions in class then he will like you. In the health portion, all the tests are open book. In the PE portion, you only need a mile time of 10:00 or below to get an A. It's okay to skip a few swim days, but if you skip a swim assessment ("The Snake") then you have to make it up on Wednesday morning. You're not judged on your speed though, it's just whether you can finish the course.

I took Expository Reading & Writing 2 with him and this was a wonderful class. The topics you learn are very insightful and relevant to the real world and provide you new perspectives to reflect upon. You learn about diversity, society, the flaws in our education system, and ourselves. The discussions where you have to speak were personally nerve-wracking for me because I was a bit "mute" in the past year and my vocal cords were super weak. I got an A on participating, though. I ended with an A in the class.

Ken Ozuna

(10 reviews)
I had Mr. Ozuna for AP Chemistry. His teaching style is very good, since he explains the notes in class, and then adds helpful things to remember, like formulas or acronyms. Every test is worth 15% of your grade. They take two days each, and is 60% multiple choice (30 questions in 45 minutes) and 40% free response. All tests are curved though, and as Ozuna always says, "there are more than enough points than you need to get a perfect score. " Pay attention during FRQ practice, as that gives you a good idea of how he grades the FRQs!! Acids and bases is the hardest unit because there are a lot of equations to memorize, and you need to do them the exact way. And finally don't be afraid to ask questions. Also Ozuna plays good music in the class during labs too.

If Mrs. P has a student teacher or assistant teacher in the class, they will do a majority of the instruction. The quality of them varies and they all have different rules. Though if Mrs. P is the only teacher, make sure you devote one entire notebook (graphing is preferred since we graph a lot, though wide ruled is acceptable) for Biology! She wants to be able to see all the assignments in order during notebook checks, and if it is too messy she will only give half credit. Go to office hours if you're confused! But not on Thursdays if you have her first trimester, as she is the faculty advisor for Math Club which meets on Thursdays.

APUSH is a difficult class but the homework is not that bad. It's just 1-2 chapters a week (20-40 pages) and taking notes on it. Then over that week you are reading/notetaking that chapter, he goes over the chapter. ALWAYS PREPARE QUESTIONS WHEN IN CLASS! He goes into depth about what happened, he knows his stuff. Homework is just notetaking, but condense it and study actively (talk with friends, videos like Jocz and Adam). Also, go to tutorial. They are usually on Thursdays' tutorials and the class gets pretty packed. You are only allowed in if you took a certain amount of notes, though, so take notes!!!

No matter what level of Spanish you have with Profe Velasco, he is sure to make your trimester memorable. In class, he only speaks Spanish, and will act all confused if you ask him a question in English. There are many partner projects where you have to get up and present a conversation in front of the class, so try to find a good partner. You have to memorize those too. Still, there isn't a lot of homework on most days, and most vocab tests are just fill in the blank, conjugate the verb, write the meaning of the word. The hardest tests are either interpretative (read the infographic and answer questions about it) or interpersonal (respond to an email), but are also worth the most points.
