You will write essays at the end of every quarter. Get used to it. There's no way to get out of it. The only memorization required for this class consists of the occasional talk about the books we're reading or when we learn vocabulary. To get on this teacher's good side, I would turn in every assignment. Treat her with respect. Be chill with her too. She likes to get to know people and make sure everyone around her is alright which I like. You can joke around with her occasionally as long as you do your work.
