I would recommend practice outside of class to get any one on one attention that's needed. I'm in Advanced Orchestra, and not only is most of the attention focused on the violins (no shame, they usually have the hardest pieces), but very seldom will a student be singled out for individual improvement. You should know how to read sheet music beforehand, but I went into the class without any knowledge whatsoever and am doing well.
