Do *all* of the formative assignments because they are free points. Participate in the fishbowl discussions and ask questions in them, don't lose points on those. Take notes on the stuff he says in class as they are very helpful for the assignments and essays. For summative essays, ask for feedback on them definitely.

Mr. Carpenter is such a wonderful teacher and one of the kindest people I have ever met. He genuinely wants everyone to succeed and I grew so much as both a writer and a human being in his class. This class opened my eyes to so many issues around the world and the discussions and writing assignments really shaped me as a writer and improved my communication skills immensely. I am so happy I decided to take Honors American Literature and I couldn’t have asked for a better teacher. He works so hard to give good detailed feedback to everyone, which is very helpful. Consider yourself lucky if you have him. You’re in for a great year!
