Class of 2025
This is the best English class in the entire school, from the bottom of my heart. If you want to genuinely learn literature and become goated at research papers, Mr. Varieur will set you up for success. The first part of the year is doing college apps, then literary terms, philosophy, Raisin in the Sun/Death of the Salesman, Hamlet/Othello, and then Beloved. There's a bunch of mini group projects in between, so make sure you choose a great group of people who you know will get stuff done with great quality. This class is very 50/50, you can procrastinate most assignments and get away with it but there's a huge research project and a bunch of play annotations which you absolutely have to work on in class. He lets everyone go outside to work which is a wonderful breather but also a huge distraction, so make sure you can lock in when you need to. Overall the material in this class is very straightforward, he hands it to you two months in advance but since the list of stuff is so long you can never really get ahead. If you do stuff at the pace he says you should do it, you'll be very comfortable. This class is infinitely better than any of the Lang classes (except Mrs. Terry, she was tuff) so if you have a passion for government/law, english, or anything related to social studies and humanities, take it.
Class of 2021
This is class is a LOT OF WORK for senior year. There is only one reason you should take this class and that is if you are aiming to max out your college application with every possible AP class you can take. Other than that, it is not worth it, especially if you have a 5 on AP Lang already. There is a lot of group work and it's terrible if you have a bad group. Make sure you're in a good group with friends you can meet with. You have to impose deadlines on your own group and space out the work otherwise procrastination will kill. The "claim" about this class 1st semester is that you spend a lot of time working on your college essays, but in reality if you're really aiming to have a good essay you'll do most of your work outside this class and submit whatever random drafts you have for homework. Hopefully you are a fast reader, a fast thinker, and a fast writer for this class otherwise you are screwed.
