What advice would you give yourself if you were just starting the class now?

I would honestly not give them any advice. They don't need it because he is an outstanding teacher. You don't need to prepare because he will prepare you. He prepares you for the future and supports you every step of the way.

Getting Mr. Perret as your elementary school teacher is a blessing. He is not the basic average teacher anyone gets. His teaching skills are unique and are incomparable to anyone else. When learning French, we would not get tested every week, but we would play with remote-controlled cars and communicate about them in French. We learned to speak fluently in French with perfect speed and accuracy. Looking back, the only French book I can still remember word for word is Le Sommet - Everest by Gordon Korman. And no we did not read it for the reading comprehension tests, but we sat in a circle and were timed one-by-one to pronounce the words, repeat the phrases and enjoy the story. Not only that, I developed my passion to sing in French in grade 3 and specifically in his class. We learned French creatively, reaching a university French level at the elementary school stage. It has been 10 years since I was in his class and yet to this day I am still in contact with him. His French teaching skills are mind-blowing and due to this, I am still passionately bilingual. My advice to anyone in his class is that they should cherish the moments and memories. Learn the language and develop your passion. Build your relationship because he is and always will be by your side.
