Grades are based mainly on tests (sometimes quizzes are counted), with the possibility of exempting a bad test/quiz if the mark is way below your average. He is also usually nicer to you if he sees that you're working hard and asking lots of questions. His tests are incredibly difficult, and requires a lot of review and practice beforehand. He is not the type of teacher that gives test questions similar to the practice questions. Instead, most test questions requires the student to be have a deep understanding of various physics principles and apply them in a problem-solving manner. If you're looking for an easy class, I would not recommend him. However, if you genuinely want to learn physics, and/or want to be well prepared for the AP exam, he is one of the best physics teachers BNSS has to offer.
