Looking back on my time in Year 7, one of the most memorable and influential parts of that year was having Mr Ryan as my teacher. Even now, it’s easy to say he was one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. What made him stand out wasn’t just his knowledge or the way he taught the subject, but the way he made every student feel seen, supported, and capable of doing more than they believed they could. From the very first week, Mr Ryan created a classroom environment that felt safe and welcoming. He had this calm but confident energy that made everyone pay attention without ever feeling scared or pressured. He treated us like real people, not just kids who had to sit and listen. He always encouraged questions, and he never made anyone feel embarrassed for not understanding something. Instead, he would patiently explain it again, using a different example or a clearer method until it finally clicked. One of the things I appreciated most about him was how passionate he was about teaching. You could tell he genuinely loved his job. He didn’t just read off slides or hand out worksheets; he made lessons interesting. He used stories, real-life examples, and sometimes even jokes to help us understand the content. Even topics that usually felt boring suddenly became something we actually wanted to learn about. His enthusiasm made the whole class more engaged, and it made learning feel less like a chore and more like something fun. But what really made Mr Ryan special was the way he cared about his students as people. He noticed when someone was having a bad day. He checked in on us, encouraged us, and reminded us that mistakes were part of learning. If someone fell behind, he didn’t get frustrated — he helped them catch up. If someone was doing well, he pushed them to go even further. He had this rare ability to balance kindness with high expectations, and that combination made everyone want to do their best. Outside of academics, he also taught us important lessons about respect, responsibility, and confidence. He modelled what it looked like to be patient, fair, and understanding. He treated everyone equally, no matter who they were or what their background was. Because of that, our class felt like a team rather than a group of random students. Even now, years later, I still remember the impact he had on me. Teachers like Mr Ryan don’t just help you pass a subject — they shape the way you think, the way you learn, and the way you see yourself. He made Year 7 a year I’ll never forget, and I’m genuinely grateful I had the chance to be in his class. If every student had a teacher like him, school would be a completely different experience.
